Underway - part two

On Tues, Sept 4 we headed back out the channel early in the morning. Looking into the sun, it was difficult to see the private markers and lobster pots.  The wind was favourable and we decided to put the main up in the channel ... oops, we ran aground in shallow soft mud, 14 ft to 1 ft, guess we should have been paying more attention to the channel.  The good thing is we managed to power our way out.
About 9:30 we heard MODAKI being called on the VHF.  The first time since leaving Owen Sound.  It was our friends Dave and Mary Lou on SUSPENDED PLAY.  They had sailed to meet us and escort us into Shediac Bay and Pointe du Chene Yacht Club.  What a wonderful welcome to the final leg of this years journey. When we got through the tricky channel and to our dock the harbour Master, Walter, sent down a pot of coffee with Dave and Mary Lou.

A new phase:
We went to lunch then began making arrangements for lifting out, with our friends driving us around.
Yesterday it rained heavily (about 80 mm) with strong winds. We spent the day doing laundry (free at the club house).  When the wind settled a bit we put the sails up, at the dock, to wash some of the salt off them.  Changed the oil, transmission fluid and checked the water level in the batteries.  We also ran fresh water thru the motor.
In the afternoon, Maurice, a single handler we met in Bouctouche came over for a visit.  Lots of talk about boats, parts and traveling.  This is him home port.

In the evening Dave and Mary Lou took us out to their place for a wonderful supper, breakfast and lunch.  It was the first time we had slept in a house in 10 weeks.  It was good to talk about old times and find out more about their families.  Dave grew up in an outpost in Newfoundland and Mary Lou in downtown Toronto.  Mixed in with the visiting we made a bunch of phone calls.  On the way back to the boat we rented a storage unit so we can empty the boat.  We began packing things up and getting MODAKI ready for winter.
There is a bit more urgency to get sails etc. off as hurricane Leslie may come this way at the first of the week.
