July 31, 2013 - Canso Marina on a mooring ball

just before we left the dock a pilot boat went over to the wharf and picked a "pilot" to take
out to the freighter waiting outside in Chedabucto Bay

this is so interesting watching the AIS boats, this is the Pilot Vessel (light grey), bottom of page, we are at the top of the page

here the Pilot vessel is at the Freighter (dark Blue) together, unloading the pilot, bottom right side

now we are in the middle, the Pilot boat (EAGLE) heading back to Port Hawksbury and we are just
meeting the freighter, (CSL Metis)

we get to see what speed they are traveling at and the distance away from us and what time we should meet, to avoid a collision.

we had to motor sail all the way, light winds

coming into Canso

you have to go around an island in deeper water to get to the centre of town

the green bouy

we read that there is a public wharf, and we circled a few times to see which one it was, got our fender board out and all fenders on STB side, it was not an easy wharf to tie up to ... it is not made for pleasure craft ...

I headed out to find a grocery store, and did provisioning for the next week.  There is no place to buy groceries until Halifax ...  I just took the grocery cart with me to the wharf ... that was easy
An elderly man stopped in his truck at the boat and offered to take the cart back for me, and he also took Joe a few miles away to the marina, to see if we could stay there for the night ...

we also had to find wifi and did a good hike to the library, were Joe got the weather report for the next day ....

as it turned out the marina is very small and did not have room for us, but we could pick up a mooring ball, for $5.00 a night, but the marina manager said it is not worth there time to dinghy out to us to collect, so it is yours free of charge ....

this fisherman tied off to the other mooring ball and fished

sun setting over Canso, were every year the Stan Rogers Concert is held, we missed it by a couple of weeks ...

an early night for us ... 5am comes soon enough to depart for the Atlantic Ocean ....
