September 6, 2014 Hadley Harbour lumpy night

we left Martha's Vineyard at 6:25 so we would reach Woods Hole with the correct tide, 3 hours later …
we had a reef in both main and foresail, the wind was still gusty and seas 2 ft plus … we had to motor sail to keep the speed, fog rolled in  … we met the ferries coming and going and other sailboats going our way thru the cut …  always look behind you when you are sailing or motoring … to our surprise a huge ferry, just like the one me met 1/2 hour earlier was bearing down on us …. we had to make a quick decision to head way to port and get out of it's way (heading to stb, we would of hit shoals).  We both got to the bouy at the same time, but at his 30 knot speed, he turned the corner and slid sideways for quite some distance, thank goodness no one was coming in the opposite direction.  Joe had planned our passage thru this cut perfectly, just did not expect to do it in the fog.

here we are again back at Hadley Hole at anchor just about the same place as a few days ago.  This ferry delivers people to the huge house on the shore, later two guys in a power boat came by to see what part of Canada we were from … they told us that their family had rented the house for a few weeks … and he said it was so nice inside that he would live there forever, but could not afford too.

later that day, this boat came in and anchored, so close to the rocks (see on left), we commented why would he anchor so close to the rock shoal, so as the tide went down and down, they were stuck in the rocks … there was 4 guys aboard, but only one seemed to know what to do … first he got in the dinghy and tried to push the boat off, then he threw out a stern anchor, probably so they would not go further on … nothing was working … after 3 hours or so the sails went up and somehow they managed to leave … a life jacket went overboard, tied to the stern anchor that they had to leave behind. Then they anchored out in deeper water.  Other people must of been watching this also, a power boat left the huge house with two people on board, went to the lifejacket, hauled up the anchor and scooted over to the sailboat with it … then everything returned to normal

The wind was to change to North West over night and at the stroke of midnight it changed to North East and Modaki and crew and the other 2 sailboats anchored close by had a very rough and roll night.
