September 7, 2014 Newport, Rhone Island

here we are in another state, Rhode Island … Castle Hill Lighthouse in Narragansett Bay heading to Newport Harbour ….. note to self … don't enter a major port on a weekend …. OMG was it ever busy,  their was a boat race going on, with about 25 boats involved, pleasure 100 ft sailboats out for the afternoon, power boats waking everyone with their speed … and wee kiddies in their skiffs learning to sail

this looked like a private home on this rock pile, they had wind and solar for power, the Newport Pell toll Bridge is in behind

passed Fort Adam's State Park, actually we are anchored very close to it, but on the other side

we left Hadley Harbour at 8am and had anchor down at 3pm, motor was on, off, on, off
38 km  7 hours  seas 1-2 ft.
I called the authorities to say we have moved, and gave location.

we had a bit of problem finding the anchoring area, but once there we found good holding and plenty of room … good to be here in September and not July/August
Newport was founded by English settlers in 1639.  Today Newport abounds to maxi-yachts, 70 knot powerboats, cruise ships, round-the-world racers and luxurious cruising palaces. (we have seen them, pictures to follow). These waters are home for many of the world's great races, such as the Cruising Club of America's Newport-to-Bermuda Race, the OSTAR single-handed Race, the Maxi Series, the Classic Yacht Regatta, the Admiral Cup trials, the New York Yacht Club Cruise and many more.

we are impressed with the public free dinghy dock, with high speed internet (got to catch up on the blog), showers for $1.75/each , laundry for $7.00 (expensive but we need salt free clothes)
this is where we do all of this in an 1700 old stone building in the basement

the Newport Pell Bridge at night … oh yeah, we are anchored near the Ida Lewis Yacht Club and cannons are fired for  "Colours" from the club house lawn at 8 am and sundown, alerting crews to raise and lower the standards (flags) of many nations throughout the harbour
good night !!!

  1. Oh yes - the canons blaring! Haha! I bet you haven't heard the last of those on this journey. Seaman's Church Institute in Newport is also a good spot for sailors (showers, laundry, free wifi). All you have to do is sell them your soul. Just kidding.
