August 4, 2014 --- Pubnico Harbour to Yarmouth Harbour

what a great wake up call … this fishing boat came in in the middle of the night and Modaki crew did not hear for feel her coming in … the fishermen , left Friday and arrived Monday morning with 70,000 lbs of haddock  ….  we watched her bow rise from 10 feet to 8 feet .. in 4 hours of unloading
we where told that the fishing grounds are 12 hours of motor  off shore and they fish and when the boat is full of  catch they return to harbour

haddock

some how we mentioned that we love haddock .. and we do

4 large fish is filleted for us  …  thank you !!!

3 seamen are on the boat out at sea and when they come back to shore it takes 7 to unload the 70,000 lbs ..

Modaki, is a midget against these beautiful fishing vessels  … we had to back up and make a circle to head out the harbour …..   if I was ever to be stranded in fog or hurricane … Pubnico Harbour I would want to stay … Joe and I had so many people come down and see us it was embarrassing to actually leave this friendly place ……  we will be back …

low tide in Pubnico

these are interesting … finally some one told us what they are … these are the lobster cars ?? … where they hold the fresh lobster once they are caught, in water that is where they are caught, salt water  and cold 5 degrees .. lobster fishing here is from last Monday in November   -- first of May … the worst weather in Canada to fish in … a hard job

leaving Pubnico, with the 17 windmills to starboard

and into 6 hours of fog

radar says something is coming out the harbour …  in dense fog it is heart stopping .. but they do suddenly appear .. a fishing boat

a light house in the centre of the river

some time passes and we see what is around us … a fishing boat, herring boat

a 6 hour motor  complete fog again, thank you radar and auto helm … there was a lot of eddies and turbulence in these waters … and of course our friend Jody Baurerlein phone calls right in the middle of  this $%$*$#@ ….  .   ever since we left Owen Sound Jody has always phoned us in a mini crisis … thanks buddy … you keep us on in line  ..a true friend for sure   ...

fog has lifted and boats heading out in the fog to fish

the harbour here is a bit not nice looking, fish scales and what ever in the harbour .. we did not use our bay/ocean tap here

the tide is 14 feet here and there is a ramp like walk and a step walk for low tides … stay tines for Digby steps …

to to continued …   p.s. there is spelling mistakes and grammar mistakes .. oh well !!!

August 3, 2014 .. Shelburne to Pubnico Harbour … AROUND CAPE HORN of Nova Scotia …

at 5:45 AM we were off the dock and out to Roseway Lighthouse on McNutt Island, with the outgoing tide

this was the last land we saw for 9 hours … we relied on radar and the chart plotter, and auto helm ..
it is so hard to steer in the fog … we have tried but it is impossible for us …  in this picture on radar and chart plotter is two fishing boats coming our way, or passing us … we keep watching  … not every one has AIS , (Automated Identification System), fishing boats are white triangles, pleasure boats are green, freighters are dark blue, tugs are pale green ….

we saw this fishing boat  on radar and suddenly it appeared about 1/4 mile from us out of the fog …
we tried to radio them, but not knowing what channel fishermen were on, we did not connect .. we powered back and they passed in front of us

this part of Nova Scotia is also called Cape Horn of Nova Scotia .. because of its tides, rip tides, bad currants, fog … the local talk had us shaking in our boots … we planned our departure from Shelburne and around the Cape and into Pubnico Harbour with the correct tides …

Pubnico Harbour, Acadian Country, lots of fishing boats

Modaki tided beside a 50 ft lobster boat …  we sure do look small

this is a big 3 basin fishing port … Modaki was in the centre basin, the other ones have boats working  there is probably 200 boats in all the 3 basins

Modaki in the right of picture … Joe and I both love these ports

draggers for ground fish

we are just inside the middle basin, tied to a huge fishing boat … as it turned out we were the first pleasure craft to visit this year … we always fly a flag of the area we are visiting, and the Acadian Flag here brought us so many lovely visitors to see us … we had an elderly couple Melfred (88 yrs old) and Paulene pick us up and take us on a 1 1/2 hr tour of Pubnico , and stopped into their house and small green house to give us a home grown English Cucumber and tomato …

just off the 10 ft climb up the lobster boat to the wharf  … and across the road we found this wonderful restaurant

Steamed local clams, haddock, and fresh lobster for supper … this is dream come true  .. thank you Nova Scotia for this fresh food

this is Pubnico Wind Farm …. 17 turbines … each turbine blade has about the wingspan of a 747.  It is a variable pitch propellor that is computer controlled to run at 16 rpm. Each turbine produced 1.8 Megawatts at full power.   …. kind of like our own wind generator on Modaki ..  bit a wee bit smaller …  to be continued

Sept 31 - Aug. 2, 2014 …. part two …. getting ready to head to the Bay of Fundy

Shelburne was the site of the Empire Loyalist Landing, the emigration in 1783 of 10,000 refugees from the American Revolution.  The charming Historic Waterfront District features the most significant built wooden heritage in Canada and rivals any area of North America for its density of original 18th Century wooden buildings.

not all pictures are of boats, water and rocks … hey daughter Lily … I can post something interesting .. right ???
these beauties were watching everyone passing on the sidewalk

today was the Farmers Market .. we got yellow beans, parsley, green onions, mushrooms, tomatoes, and berries

one of the historic buildings

a monument to the "lost at sea" sailors … back as far as 1876  … it was hard to read this, in July 1927, about 20 sailors lost .. and 8 had the same last name ….

before we started this adventure we heard of a cruising guide of N.S.  ..  we contacted Peter Loveridge and got his CD, on the Crusing Guide to Nova Scotia … we took it to Staples and had it printed and spiral bound, it is 1 1/2 inches thick … we have been using it for the past 2 years as one of our guides … and to our surprise he is in this marina, and only a few boats away … we just had to tell him and his lovely wife how their hard work, year after year has helped us navigate Nova Scotia

deflating the dinghy to pack on the deck, for an early departure tomorrow, around the tip of Nova Scotia, and heading to Yarmouth and the Bay of Fundy …..   lets hope it is a Fun Day  for us
… to be continued

July 31 - August 2, 2014 … Mouton Harbour - Shelburne Harbour … part one

We found parts to make new plugs for our cockpit draining .. the old ones were only one year old, the corks break down and the hardware rusts … we found stainless hardware this time

Mosher Lighthouse …  it sure is looking tough

we made our way out to the ocean for a 7 hour passage, well it looks like I don't have my sea legs yet .
the ocean was still rolling 5 - 6 ft rollers, and very light wind … so Modaki was moving sideways, then up and down, very confused seas …  it has been a while but I fed the fishes on this trip … and slept in this bed , not of any use to anyone for 6 hours … thank goodness for auto pilot, no fog, and Joe that has not been affected by sea sickness

our passage 31 nm  7 hours

our destination was Mouton Harbour, Carters Beach,
we anchored in 25 ft , sandy/mud … there was lots of people on the beach, but no one was in the water
13.5 C. … also lots of Jelly Fish, this harbour was named by Champlain, because a sheep fell overboard … it is 2 miles long … a very welcoming beach

sun set at Carters Beach

there is a fish farm in the area, as we passed a guy was throwing food pellets to the salmon

Mouton Island Light house

it is hard to see here, but guys in small boats were using a long pole and picking up the sea weed, we found out later that they are harvesting it and selling for medicinal purposes

we saw this house built into the rock, 2 large windows and an underground entrance built into the hill … I wonder who this belongs to … I would love to have a tour

okay … it is hard to take pictures of seals in the water … there are so many that pop up here and there to have a look at us as we pass them …. the seal before this one had his nose and part of the head out of the water and he stayed there, not like the rest of them … as we passed (no camera, ready), raised the rest of his head out and he had about a 10 - 12 inch fish in his mouth…the fish was still struggling to get free  .. this was the first time we have ever seen this
side note here :  today cruisers arrived and commented on seeing a turtle about 3 ft in diameter at the surface and a SunFish, about 6 ft diameter  … we are hoping to see both on this trip  and Puffins too

Sandy Point Lighthouse in the river to Shelburne, at low tide it is completely out of the water and you can walk to it …but don't take a boat between lighthouse and land

a boat yard that does repairs in Shelburne, on the way up the river, this river is only 10 miles long

Shelburne Yacht Club is the red building

our passage 8 1/4 hours and 40 nm …
