winterizing

well life on a 30 ft. gets real cozy when you are taking her apart for the winter ... we had a few movies we wanted to watch .. so movie night again with pop corn ... life is better on the water !!
we biked to the storage unit, to change our boat stuff from unheated to heated units .. it's cold in NB.  in the winter
maybe 30 cart load moved off the boat .. the water line kept getting higher and higher
moving 2 carts at a time
we are sharing a unit with "Genevieve" Moira and John Coull, from Picton, ..... MODAKI on the right
pot luck with Moira and John and friends
Mary Lou, carrying the boom, and always doing all the work, and Dave following behind to pick up the pieces .. just kidding Dave !!!
our walk to Parlee Beach Prov. Park, right next to yacht club
red right returning
lots of interesting features in this house, walk way to roof, bouys as fence posts
this place was fantastic, look at bouys, red right returning !!!
window box boat
famous Parlee Beach
the water was warmer than Sauble Beach ..
we had hoped to return the following day for a swim, but did not happen
pizza night ... anchovies too
our friend Maurice and his son 2 1/2  year old, Maxime
Maxime reminded me so much of Wyatt Baker, back home ... this young French lad knows more French than me
Maxime is a sailor in the making, he loved to handle the tiller and got to stop the motor too.
Walter, the Yacht Club manager said we would use wood from the old docks, for our mast supports, they also lent us the tools to get the job done
skipper cutting the boards to fit
this was a windy day, blowing 20 - 25 knots, and friends together, took instruments off about 4 boats in a morning
another trip to the storage unit, GENEVIEVE on the left, and  MODAKI on the right

Tues. Sept 11/2012 - notes from the skipper

Well we have been in Shediac for a few days at Pointe du Chene Yacht Club.  Wonderful facilities with great people.  Walter, staff at the club has been very helpful in getting all our arrangements made.  Maurice has been helping us get some of our things up to storage.  The weather has not been great, lots of rain and wind.  It was a good decision to stop here at this time.

Dave and Mary Lou hosted a pot luck for us with some of their sailing friends on Saturday.  It was wonderful to meet with everyone and share stories.
Most of the time is spent getting the boat ready for the winter.  Everything is coated in salt so this means washing and cleaning.

SAILS :  We left them up in the rain to get the salt off, then put them back up in the sun to dry.
MOTOR: we ran fresh water through it for 5 min.  Once MODAKI is on the hard we will run it for 1/2 hour with fresh water before antifreeze. Note - next year we will run fresh water thru at least once a week
BLOCKS and FITTINGS:  corrosion is evident on many of them, so we cleaned and oil/grease as much as we can.  Once we are out of the water all of the turnbuckles will have to be cleaned.  This means rubbing kerosene into the threads with a tooth brush and then greasing everything before putting back together.  It's amazing, salt even corrodes stainless steel
DECKS and HULL:  Although the rain has removed much of the salt we will still give everything a good scrub.
INTERIOR: Once empty we will wipe everything down with vinegar and water to prevent mold over the winter.

Friday, Sept 14, is lift out for MODAKI.  Here they use the big crane to take the mast down before putting the boat on the truck for transport to the storage area (about 2 miles inland).  It's my understanding that we get 20 min with the crane so everything will have to be loose and ready.
Last night and this morning we are getting the tail of hurricane Leslie, that went east and out over Newfoundland.  Winds topping out at 40 km, so we were thankful not to be at anchor.

We have been exploring town, Pointe du Chene/ Shediac on the bikes, Dave and Mary Lou lent us but as the weather improves we hope to walk the great Parlee Beach near by.

stripping the boat

10 weeks on the water, but 6 weeks in salt water, this is what happens ... a new experience for us
we found a new cleaner, thanks to Dave and Mary Lou,  look how it cleaned our BBQ ... now do the other side
radar off and ready to put into storage, the salon getting very crowded
we bought ear muffs for the outboard (we left ours at home), and Joe flushed the motor of salt water, thank goodness we had lots of fresh water close by ... this salt water is teaching us a lot in maintenance ... we are lucky to sail in fresh water, back home
this marina is mostly sail boats, of all shapes and sizes
good night
