12 locks in 12 hours and humidity
July 4, 2012
12 locks in 12 hours .... on a humid day ...
Hey it was hard to leave beautiful Bobcaygeon ... we where on the park side and had a short walk to the washrooms ... sure helps with pump outs.
Today we knew to was to be a hard day of travel causes we had to make it to Scott's Mills lock #19 .. the last of the locks before Rice Lake ... we needed to leave as early as possible ..
we left at 6am for the long trip to the first lock which was 3 hours away, we got there at 9 am .. which was Buckhorn,
When we left Bobcaygeon we did 12 locks, 5 swing bridges, thru Rottenstone Island, at one knot, then Hell's Gate, and we turned around 2 times to make sure we where on the correct canal ... but once we decided this was the correct path, we enjoyed the beautiful scenery ..
My sister Louise and hubby Mike Pepe said we should stop at Lovesick #30 to catch fish and crayfish ... but we had to push thru .. so at 10am we just had to lock thru
Some of the locks from Lakefield where close together, so 2 power boats and us locked thru together .. we went thru Sawer Creek, Douro, Otonabee, Nassaua Mills, and the 65 ft drop Peterborough ... to add to our excitement there is a swing bridge,
remember 3 blasts of your horn .. it is hard to see all the dangers ahead ... when you are first time on the canal and everything is new ... it is hard
At this last swing bridge the operator yelled at us to say they are holding the locks for us .... so MODAKI came gliding into the largest lift lock in the world ..
the Peterborough Locks .....
We spend the night at Scott's Mills ... at bottom of the locks
The humidity was too much for us today on a long travel day ... both of us feeling
not well ... we sunscreened at least 3 times each, and drank more than a ton of water .. we don't have the facilities to shower, and the canal water is not looking very good for swimming ... we had keys for the lock wall washrooms and each of us did our best to sponge bath .. hey we survived it .. so far ........ what I keep thinking is when we get past Quebec we will be getting closer to the iceburg season ..........
We have not had problems with mosquitos or deer flies, just a few, well the deer flyes got me on my ankle and foot .... they don't like Joe, just me!!!!!
