July 5/12

6 locks and 11 hours

Scott's Landing was very beautiful and quiet until the fishermen arrived at
4:30 and started chattering ... we both where so tired from the day before, the alarm went off at 5 and we got off at 6:30 .... late ....
It took us 3 hours to motor down the Otonabee River to Rice Lake in 6 to 15 ft
of muddy river.  We met 4 American power boaters, probably doing the Loop.
We met 2 Catamaran's and one radioed us to see where they could put there
mast up in GEORGIAN BAY
Out in Rice Lake, we had a chance to put auto steering on .... what , a treat ...
Joe did his laundry and hung it out on the life lines .. he even cleaned the head
(always a Joe job)
I had a snooze and  ..... well Joe did every thing else   .... so I enjoyed being on watch and avoiding the small fishing boats

I forgot to say that on the river Otonabee , we saw Osprey, even one dive bombing to catch a fish, which he/she got, herons, Canada Geese, King Fishers, orange billed sea gulls (Felix, what is it ????), Painted and snapping turtles ... no loons on this area, but have seen maybe 20 so far.

Hastings #18  would of been a great place to stop at, the swing bridge swings then you immediately go in to the lock.   The heat was effecting everyone, the lock masters only opened one side of the gates .... I looked at Joe and many thoughts  and words ran thru my mind .....

Well Joe is okay with these challenges and he preformes wonderfully ... I am the nervous Nelly .....

Healy Falls is flight locks, which means you do one lock then immediately go into the next and go down again, then travel a short distance and do 3rd lock, which is total 76 ft lock down.

At lock 15, we had to wait for divers to re attach one of he cables, that help us to lock down on, then when we got to go in the lock and was just about locked down
water came in behind your stern like Niagara Falls, ... what happens is there is too much water above us, when they open the damn above and we get rained on .. if we where closer to end wall (which they won't let you be) it would of been refreshing.

We have been travelling with another power boat, and locking down together, and of course power boaters go first ...
all the locks so far have been to the left, so when we get to lock #13 .... the sun  is
in your eyes and it is hard to see .. the slow pokes, us, head to the right and  Mr. Power Boat heads to the left , right to the power plant .....thankfully Mr. Power Boat , realizes his mistake and  corrects his approach and he powers up to be in front of us again...

Just another day on the canal ..... looking forward to being a sail boat again !!!
